As the nine municipal councils of the York Region Real Estate Scheme busily approve new subdivisions, area politicians know (in their gut) that southern Ontario is immune to the ills that are befalling other parts of the world. No oil crisis or energy crunch for York Region. no global warming, no food shortages, no drought, no problem. And yet, we produce little of our own food and no oil or natural gas or hydroelectric power. We have dewatered millions of gallons of water from the Region’s aquifers to facilitate a massive sewer expansion. As property taxes increase, we’re told the Region’s debt will double in nine years but that most of this debt will be paid for by “development charges”. And yet, the regional debt already stands at $1.8-billion. When will the majority of it be paid back?
